Westfield’s wacky answer to the Indy 500 takes place each August on Westfield’s main drag – Union Street. Gravity-powered, homemade derby cars compete in bracketed heats until winners are declared. Realistic racers competing in the Classic Class are built for speed and generally look like cars. For the Funky Class, anything goes—weird, wild, whatever. Fast is good, but outrageous is better.
Racers win prizes for fastest, slowest, best use of imagination, ugliest and whatever new category organizers can think up. Kids under 10 can race tricycles and Big Wheels for free.
Rules:
1. Car must fit in an 8x8x8 foot box.
2. Must have some kind of brake!
3. At least one driver. Multiple drivers optional.
4. Human power only-no motors.
5. Two pushers for the up-hill portion.
6. Home built only.
7. Entry fee: $20
Local restaurants and civic organizations offer food for purchase, but music is free. Bring blanket and lawn chairs.
